General Woodworking and the Creation of Miniatures from Wood

Best of the Best

Larry | November 30, 2008

Taunton Press is certainly king of the hill when it comes to publishers of woodworking books and magazines.  Their line of books sets the standard for photography and good information and many of their books are so beautiful that you want to leave them on display.

They are also the publishers of Fine Woodworking, a magazine from which I get much of my knowledge of woodworking.  Fine Woodworking is also my source for many of my miniature furniture creations.  They consistently seek out the best of the best to write about aspects of woodworking and so it’s no surprise that, when they decided to feature a woodworker who creates miniatures, they located one of the best.  The back cover of the current issue of Fine Woodworking, the annual Tools and Shop issue, features a box of miniature gems by none other than Bill Robertson, one of the finest miniaturists on the planet.

But wait… just like the Vegamatic commercials of old… there’s MORE, MUCH MORE!  Fine Woodworking has put together a wonderful slide show of Bill’s work and it’s narrated by none other than Bill himself.  Make sure you don’t miss this as it’s as inspiring as it is inspired.

Stumbling around

Larry | November 29, 2008

Some things in life are easy.  Some things are hard.  Some just make your brain hurt.  Establishing this blog is in this last category.  I’m still stumbling around, looking at different themes, trying to figure out how to get graphics into these msgs and wondering why I’m getting error messages while at the same time the action I’m taking works.  Very odd that.

I guess this is just another lesson in what seems to be a truism.  If you can’t be good at something; at least be persistent.

Hello World!

Larry | November 29, 2008

Hi everyone,

The Wood’n Bits website has operated in silence for several years.  I thought it time to establish a blog in an attempt to provide voice to the site and, hopefully, to pass on information about woodworking and, more specifically, the creation of miniatures from wood.

At this moment, the gleam in my eye is to associate a podcast with this blog and in doing so I’ll be able to provide actual how-to slide shows and possibly videos, showing some of the techniques.

My name is Larry Marshall and I’m a woodworker…an old woodworker but a woodworker nevertheless.

I’d love to hear from you about everything and anything associated with woodworking.

Cheers — Larry
