Designing Furniture
What is the proper table height for a dining table, a coffee table, or an end table? When creating a chair, how high should the seat be? How deep? And what’s up with the staggered depths of drawers in standard bedroom chests?
These are some of the questions that come to mind when we design a piece of furniture. Other issues involve wood sizes, how to achieve good esthetics, and a host of other issues that are both fascinating and sometimes frustrating if we get it wrong. We need someone to distill this stuff down for us, don’tcha think?

Once again Taunton Press is coming to our aid. While there are books on these subjects, Taunton has decided to address designing furniture in the form of an inexpensive, 100-page special issue associated with their Fine Woodworking magazine. It sells for $8.99 and will be released on June 17th. Right now, you can get free shipping if you pre-order it from their website. While I haven’t seen it, every one of their special issues have been great references for my miniatures work as well as my full-size woodworking so I highly recommend this one on faith. I just ordered my copy. Oh…and no, Taunton isn’t paying me to hawk their books. I wish they would (grin)
Cheers — Larry
