There’s not much going on in the Wood’n Bits Workshop right now. You’ll probably laugh but the Olympics has turned me into a couch potato. Well, I shouldn’t blame the Olympics for my shape but they are causing me to sit on a couch firmly attached to the glass teat.
I not sure what it is [...]

Several people asked me that question as I’ve made comments about my tablesaw being little more than a table in my shop as, more and more, I use handsaws to do my work. The short answer is “No.”. The not so short answer is “Heck No!” But the only answer worth writing about is a [...]

“Education is everywhere whether you choose to listen and learn it or not.” – Tom Fidgen
Those of us interested in working with hand tools truly live in a golden age. One wonders what the masters of the 17th and 18th Centuries would think of the wide array of tools we have available currently. And more [...]

Anyone who has been a woodworker for any length of time has stories like this. I was slothing around when the phone rang. It was a friend on the phone. He wanted to know where to buy a “good” straight edge because he needed to cut a bunch of 6″ squares in Fomecore using an [...]

One of the best books on how to get the most from a table saw while keeping all your fingers in the process is Table Saw Magic by Jim Tolpin. This book has been around a long time and it remains the most recommended text for would-be table saw drivers. It’s been my go-to table [...]

A friend of mine called me this morning with a request. He needed a small piece of hardwood of a certain length and width. I told him to come over and that he was more than welcome to the wood. When he arrived we descended into my dungeon and I picked up a cross-cut saw [...]

Are you one of those guys who has a wall of woodworking tools, each in its place, all lined up according to size as though they’re part of a museum display? Does your workbench sit in the middle of a nice, clean space, probably on wood floors? If so, then I’m jealous of you. I [...]

One of the fun things about being a woodworker is that once you have a bunch of tools, you can do a lot of things with them. Oddly, most people don’t, concentrating on a single form of woodworking, whether it be scrollsawing, furniture making, miniatures, or whatever.
I’m not so much that way. I enjoy working [...]

I thought some of you might find this interesting. It looks at ‘diorama’ as art. I find some of it weird, some of it very cool. If nothing else, it provides fodder for the thoughts of those who enjoy doing scenes with their miniatures.

The miniatures world is dominated by women while the woodworking world is dominated by men. I do miniature woodworking and so the differences in how men and women approach creativity and craftsmanship are ever-present in conversations I have with people. You’d think I’d be good at discussing these differences. I thought I was – until [...]
