Test Driving A New Rip Saw On A Mountain Road
You know the feeling when you get a new tool but don’t have a reason to use it immediately? If you’re like me that means you go to the scrapbox, find a willing piece of wood, and apply tool to wood… with no goal other than to play. I did that with the two new handsaws I just completed but somehow, for saws, this sort of thing doesn’t satisfy in the same way as the scrap box play with a plane, spokeshave, or most other tools.
So, when I realized I was going to need a bunch of thin walnut panels I decided to use my new rip saw. I didn’t build it for resawing and it may be a bit fine for such things, but…new tool…new task…sometimes a hammer gets used to drive screws.
Frankly, I was surprised at how well this 7 ppi saw worked to cut these panels, each is just shy of 2-feet long. Took me a couple hours to create this pile. Had much fun.

Larry: I just found your blog and have spent the last two hours reading the Miniature archives and following links there while my husband watches BOTH semi-final football games *sigh*. I’ve decided to fulfill a long-held dream of bulding a dollhouse so I actually asked my husband for a sheet of plywood for Christmas. Have since purchased a wiring kit and will soon get started following the plans on a “Build a Dollhouse” site I found a couple of months back. So sorry you haven’t been posting anything new in the miniature side of your blogs but am looking forward to reading your regular woodworking archived posts now that I’ve finished the miniature ones. Great explanations and love your writing style. Will have to buy your book so I can get the full effect as it translates to the fiction world.

Thanks so much for a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Is this where we shake hands at the door and you promise to call me?? Gotta go – my father’s flicking the light on and off!
Hi Marilyn,
Thanks for stopping by Wood’n Bits. I’m sorry that much of the miniatures side of the site has been pulled but I’m no longer building furniture or doing turnings for sale so it didn’t seem to make sense to leave it there. I’m glad you enjoyed looking through the how-to articles, though. I wish you luck with your dollhouse building. It’s a great hobby.
You’re probably right that I won’t call you but if you have any questions during your adventure, feel free to contact me. If I don’t know the answer I can probably direct you to someone who does.
Cheers — Larry
